The Indiana Division of the United States Canoe Association held the 40th Annual Sugar Creek Canoe and Kayak Races, on Saturday, April 27, 2002.  Special thanks go out to the individuals who made this race happen, they include: Bob Stwalley, Erin Begue, Kurt Begue, Crawfordsville Journal Review, Crawfordsville Fire Department and Rescue Team, Indiana DNR representatives.  

The water level for this years race was perfect.  There were distinct channels of premium water to be found throughout the course.  However, although the water was in perfect condition, the weather was difficult.  At race time, the temperature was 50 degrees with a wind chill that made it feel like 40.  From the start to the finish of the race, there was a cold rain beating down upon the paddlers.  The water temperature was a brisk 45 degrees. These conditions made for some very chilled hands and feet before the races were over.  But folks, this is why wimps don't paddle.

The morning races went off without a hitch, even with the inclimate weather conditions.  However, with more powerful storms lurking, the afternoon races were cancelled and will not be rescheduled.
