Aug 27:
2nd Annual South Bend to Mishawaka Canoe and Kayak Race 7.2 Miles on St.
Joseph River
Race day morning was partly cloudy and in the 80's. The water level was down
making the channel run around Kamms Island a little difficult but navigable.
This year we had a rower, Doug Yuey, exhibit with the canoe and kayak racers.
We modified the course for him eliminating the turn around Kamms Island.
The fastest time of the day went to Steve Peterson paddling an ICF boat.
Our youngest competitor was Austin Schwin a 14 year old who paddled the 3-mile
course.
We held an informal 1000-meter sprint in the afternoon in wind and a few
white caps. About 8 of us lined up at the starting line without a timer to
see, "who could beat who," down the river. Many of us paddled boats other
than our typical racing boat. Bill Kanost, a canoer, paddled an Epic kayak,
Buzz Lail, ICF boat paddler, was in a C-1. It was great fun to trade boats
and "scream" down the river!
Many thanks to the volunteers, James Fischer, Kelly Harrington, and Ted Beatty
for timing and Patrick Sawyer for photography! - Sonja Gilman
